The big winner at PokerStars 2009 WCOOP this past weekend was a player that goes by the name of Sumpas, who took down the high-rollers event. The event, which had a $10,000 buy-in and a $2 million guaranteed prize pool, awarded Sumpas as first prize winner $611,455. Once the 299 entrants were registered, the total prize pool jumped to $2.99 million.

This is not Sumpas’ first big win at Poker Stars, nor at a PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker either, as in the 2008 WCOOP Main Event, he finished in 6th place for a $415,150 prize.

No one knows Sumpas’ real name (at least not yet) but we do know that he hails from Linkoping, Sweden.

The $10,000 High-Rollers event final table included the likes of World Poker Tour (WPT) champ Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul, European Poker Tour (EPT) founder John Duthie, Scott Freeman, and Mike “Sowerss” Sowers.

Sowerss took second place for $448,500 and BeL0WaB0Ve took third place for $337,870.

World Poker Tour Season 7 is upon us – having just started last Wednesday, May 6 – and the largest poker room in the world, PokerStars, is upping its stake in the series.

Now Poker Stars will be the title sponsor and have exclusive in-show branding in any Season VII World Poker Tour event that is hosted by Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten, and is broadcast in Canada, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. Such localized World Poker Tour broadcasts have already been done successfullyin the U.K., France, Macedonia, South Korea, and the Philippines.

PokerStars and the WPT are also helping each other to branch out further in Latin America, with Spanish and Portuguese language broadcasts to localized areas in Latin America.

This isn’t the first collaboration between Poker Stars and the World Poker Tour. Until the 2006 passage of the UIGEA, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure was part of each year’s World Poker Tour Schedule. Read more about the PokerStars WPT news here.

PokerStars is now giving its players a chance to win a seat in one of the many widespread European Poker Tour (EPT) Season 5 Events. The PokerStars EPT Season 5 has been running since September of 2008 and made stops in Barcelona, Spain; London, England; Budapest, Hungary; Warsaw, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; Deauville, France; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Dortmund, Germany. Still on the docket is San Remo, Italy, and then its on to the EPT Grand Finals, which will be held from April 28-May 3, as always in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Also a favorite event on every year’s EPT schedule, and Season 5′s no less, is the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the singular EPT event, perhaps, to which Poker Stars offers the most opportunities to satellite in.

It’s a perfect case of “it ain’t over ’til it’s over”. There’s only one event left before the Grand Finals, but its still not too late to win a seat there. Just go to PokerStars to find out all the details.
